IU Health considering merger of two Indianapolis hospitals
A spokesperson for IU Health says the company may merge two Indianapolis hospitals as inpatient needs decline.
Whitney Ertel says IU Health will look first at how patient care needs to be delivered as the company considers the future of Methodist and University Hospitals. A team of 25 senior leaders and physicians make up the group studying the matter.
The group will eventually make a determination about how those goals would be met using existing structures.
Ertel says IU Health is committed to downtown Indianapolis and has no plans to move from the area.
The Indianapolis Business Journal reported Friday the emergency rooms at the two hospitals are already planning to merge next month. The ER at University Hospital will close July 1 and send its patients to the Methodist Hospital emergency room.
