Irvington motel torn down

An Indianapolis neighborhood will celebrate as crews tear down a long-time eyesore.

Demolition began Monday on the former Indy East Motel that the Irvington Development Organization calls a "blight on the neighborhood." It has worked for years to get rid of the building in the 5800 block of East Washington near North Arlington.

"Today is the beginning of demolition of this property. We've been looking forward to this for years. We've worked with the city on going back to 2006 to revoke the license of this motel. They moved out in 2009. It has sat empty and been quite the magnet for criminal activity ever since, or even before that," said Margaret Banning, Irvington Development Organization.

After the demolition. crews will build 50 new apartment units.

The new project should be finished in October of 2013.
