Inmate killed in stabbing at Putnamville prison

Darwin Elmore

An inmate at Putnamville Correctional Facility was killed in a stabbing by another inmate Thursday, the Indiana Department of Correction said.

Darwin Elmore, 34, died in the stabbing, which prompted a lockdown at the prison. It happened around 6:45 pm in a general population dorm.

Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene, and the coroner pronounced Elmore dead at 11:32 pm.

Indiana State Police have identified a suspect, whose name will not be released until he is formally charged. The inmate has been isolated from the general prison population due to safety concerns.

An autopsy of the victim is being performed Friday to determine the official cause of death. Formal charges are anticipated through the Putnam County Prosecutor's Office.

Elmore was serving two consecutive sentences for dealing cocaine out of Marion County starting in 2007. He was transferred to Putnamville last July from the Indianapolis Re-entry Educational Facility July 5, 2013. His earliest projected release date was June 8, 2016. His family has been notified.
