An inmate at the New Castle Correctional Facility died after he was found unconscious in a stairwell Thursday night.

Jeremiah K. Taylor, 37, of Ligonier, was found at the bottom of the stairwell around 11:05 p.m. Thursday. He was taken by ambulance to Henry County Hospital, then airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he died of his injuries.

Taylor was serving an eight-year sentence on a child molestation conviction in Noble County. He had been incarcerated at the New Castle facility since July of last year.

Investigators believe Taylor was battered shortly before he was found in the stairwell. The investigation is ongoing.
