If you ask Amanda Dorman, Indianapolis is 'the place to be' this holiday weekend.

Dorman is the spokesperson for Indianapolis Downtown Inc., which promotes downtown events.

And, there are plenty of them over the Independence Day weekend.

"You can go almost anywhere, get something to eat, sit outside," Dorman said. "There are festivities for everyone."

The Donatos Downtown Freedom Blast will launch fireworks from the top of Regions Bank Tower at the end of the evening, but it's just the beginning of the Fourth of July events around the city.

The day begins as early as 8 a.m. Friday with the Firecracker 6 Run/Walk at City Market. A festival follows.

All day long, there are events for the entire family at places like Victory Field, Georgia Street and Mass. Ave.

Most include music, food and fun.

A new event this year includes a picnic-style atmosphere on Mass. Ave. as Indy Fringe is shutting down the popular street to put up, perhaps, the city's longest picnic table, topping it with fried chicken, biscuits and other picnic fare. The event also includes magicians, face painting and family activities.

With tens of thousands expected downtown this weekend, parking will be at a premium.

Indianapolis Downtown Inc. promotes more than 70,000 parking spaces.

"There will be meter-free parking Friday, all the garages will be open, the surface lots open and IndyGo is offering extra routes' that day as well," Dorman said.
