Indy hosting 5K run/walk to pay for teen summer jobs
A summer jobs program designed to keep teens busy this summer may also help reduce violence.
IMPD and public safety officials are partnering with local businesses and community groups to raise money for the effort. The city will host a 5k run and walk in June. Donations will create summer jobs for teenagers.
"When they get out of school, they don't feel like they have a lot of opportunities," explained Department of Public Safety Director Troy Riggs. "The other thing they said - they don't have anyone who holds them accountable."
The 5K run and walk will be on June 7 at 9:00 a.m. It starts at City Market. No registration is required.
The Department of Public Safety has already raised more than $20,000 in sponsorships for the event. All donations collected go to the summer jobs programs.
