An Indianapolis City-County Council member has announced he will donate his salary from his elected position to an endowment benefiting children's programming in honor of his late wife.

The Indiana Business Journal reports Steve Talley has pledged to donate his council salary during the next four years. That's a total of about $52,000.

The donation will be made through the Indianapolis Public Library Foundation. The endowment will be called the Donna D. Talley Story Theatre Fund. It will be managed by the Central Indiana Community Foundation and will be supported by an initial gift of $25,000 from two other donors.

Talley says his wife, who died in 2006, believed in the importance of reading.
