INDOT issues alert for truckers during I-65 South Split project

Truckers are being reminded to observe signage regarding the I-65 and I-70 closure in downtown Indianapolis. They're being asked to follow the designated I-465 detour around the south side of the city.

INDOT says some truck traffic has been seen continuing downtown on the I-65 southbound and I-70 westbound ramp system in an attempt to bypass construction and exiting onto Fletcher Avenue. This preventable problem forces truck traffic onto downtown streets not designed to accommodate large trucks, prompting congestion and safety concerns. Additionally, local weight limits exist which must be avoided by truck traffic.

The trucks prompted concern from some Fountain Square and Fletcher Place residents.

INDOT has deployed additional message signs on and before the downtown ramp system to Michigan Street, Ohio Street and Fletcher Avenue. INDOT says it is also working with the City of Indianapolis and law enforcement agencies to consider additional traffic control and enforcement efforts.

INDOT and local agencies recognize the importance of freight traffic to the state and national economy, and most I-65 and I-70 ramps into downtown Indianapolis remain open for local deliveries. Large trucks making trips through Indianapolis should expect significant traffic delays inside the I-465 loop and follow the posted detour.
