Indianapolis' Meals on Wheels delivers 7 millionth meal

A milestone delivery of the "Meals on Wheels" program made history in second way Tuesday.

Marvin and Virginia have been receiving deliveries twice-a-day for the last year but Tuesday was the first time the delivery came from the "World of Outlaws" racing star Steve Kinser, in honor of the program's 7 millionth meal.

"This is my better day. The last two have been my better weeks," Virginia said. "I guess the Lord has been getting me ready for this day."

Virginia is filled with energy and loves a crowd, but it wasn't always that way, especially after three bypass surgeries.

"I had my first heart attack on June 10. Didn't know it; all I knew was that I was going down," she said.

Since that day, it has been hard for her and Melvin - married for 38 years - to make meals on their own.

"They have been a blessing and still are a blessing because I am still not strong enough to do the things I would like to do."

They're appreciative of the help but more importantly, feel part of a community thanks to Steve and Meals on Wheels.

Meals on Wheels is a United Way agency that's supported by private donations. It's been serving the Indianapolis area since 1971.
