Indianapolis man killed in overnight crash on I-65 near 71st St.
Indiana State Police are investigating a fatal crash between a car and a semi-trailer in the northbound lanes of Interstate 65 near 71st Street on the northwest side.
The crash happened at 3:00 a.m.
A WTHR crew on the scene reports a BMW passenger vehicle crashed into the rear of the semi-trailer. State Police dispatch confirmed at least one fatality in the car.
Pike Township Fire Captain Rob Saunders said the semi driver was driving at or below the speed limit when he felt the car hit his trailer and pulled over.
According to police, Alfonso Rios Garcia, 29, of Indianapolis, was northbound I-65 in a 2001 BMW when he ran into the rear of a semi-tractor trailer. The semi-tractor was going at a normal speed when it was struck, police said.
The truck driver told officers he felt something strike the rear of the truck and found the car still pinned under the trailer when he pulled onto the emergency shoulder to investigate.
The truck driver was not injured.
Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene by the Marion County Coroner's office. An autopsy will be performed to determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
The right lane of northbound I-65 was closed until approximately 7:00 a.m. for the investigation and crash cleanup.
