Indianapolis man killed in northern Indiana highway crash

An Indianapolis man was killed and his son critically injured in a crash in Jasper County Tuesday morning.

State police say 44-year-old Jason Spears was driving north on I-65 near Rensselaer when he slammed his pick-up truck into the rear of an Oldsmobile ahead of him in the left lane. The driver of the Oldsmobile, 24-year-old Timothy Newell Jr. of Osseco, Michigan, told police he saw Spears' truck approaching at what appeared to be a high rate of speed, but he could not react quickly enough.

The Jasper County coroner pronounced Spears dead at the scene. Spears and his 20-year-old son, Jason Spears II, were both ejected from the vehicle. The younger Spears was taken to Jasper County Hospital, then flown by helicopter to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis with life-threatening injuries.

Newell drove his car into the median and was not injured.

Investigators say neither victim in the pick-up truck were wearing a seatbelt and it is not known if drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.
