An Indianapolis school administrator has received a $25,000 prize for furthering excellence in education.

Snacks Crossing Elementary assistant principal Candace Ewing received a 2012 Milken Educator Award in a surprise school assembly Thursday.

Ewing didn't know she was being considered for the award because each state education departments appoint independent committees to recommend candidates for consideration by the Milken Family Foundation.

Each year, the award honors up to 40 educators nationwide whose contributions generally go unrecognized.

More than $63 million has been awarded to more than 2,500 educators since the program began in 1985. Since Indiana joined the program in 1993, 57 teachers have been awarded a total of more than $1.4 million.
