Indianapolis auto dealer O'Brien dies at 82

Indianapolis auto dealer J. Thomas O'Brien has died at the age of 82.

O'Brien, a graduate of Cathedral High School and the University of Notre Dame, opened his first car dealership in 1962. His father, Thomas J. O'Brien, had operated a Plymouth DeSoto dealership on Virginia Avenue since 1933. Sixteen family members currently work at several family dealerships in Indianapolis.

O'Brien is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joan, and the couple's 14 children, 57 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Shirley O'Brien Creamer.

Calling hours for O'Brien will be held at St. Luke Catholic Church at 7575 Holliday Drive East in Indianapolis from 4-8 p.m. Friday (Dec. 20). The funeral will be held at St. Luke Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor or St. Luke Catholic Church.

Funeral arrangements will be handled by Leppert Mortuary, 740 E. 86th Street, Indianapolis.
