More than 60,000 homes and businesses are without electricity across northern Indiana after strong thunderstorms with winds gusting more than 60 miles per hour swept through the area.

The National Weather Service has numerous reports of power lines and trees being knocked down during Monday night's storm. Most of the damage reports came from the Gary area through South Bend.

Major utility companies reported at least 120,000 outages in northern Indiana in the storm's wake. About half of those had been restored by Tuesday morning. Some 15,000 outages remained in South Bend and St. Joseph County, while Gary still had about 14,000 outages.
