Indiana State Police are warning holiday shoppers to be careful to avoid being victimized by pickpockets, purse snatchers and other wrongdoers on Black Friday.

Police say the holiday season heralds not only bargains, but crime. Vehicle break-ins, pickpocketing, purse snatchings, and residential burglaries are normally on the rise during this period.

State police advise shoppers to make sure they park in well-lit areas and lock their vehicles, carry only the amount of cash or credit cards needed, and pay attention to their surroundings at all times.

They also advise people not to shop alone and not to leave their belongings unattended.

Police say purchases and packages should be placed out of sight in trunks or elsewhere in vehicles.
