Indiana hospital to unveil new mother-baby unit
A western Indiana hospital is preparing to open a new unit where mothers and their newborns will spend time bonding after delivery.
The Tribune-Star reports the new 30-bed "mother-baby" unit will open Monday at Union Hospital in Terre Haute. A $3 million, four-month renovation transformed the hospital's former medical-surgical floor into the new unit.
The unit was built to accommodate the growing number of births the hospital has seen in recent years.
The new space will house mothers and their newborn babies after delivery. New mothers will be taught how to breast feed and educated about child care while a stork shop will allow mothers to purchase breast-feeding materials.
Hospital officials say the unit's goal is keeping mothers and infants together in a room to allow bonding time.
