The leader of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is pitching an idea for a suspension bridge to carry hikers and bikers over a couple of highways that could become a signature structure for the area.

Park superintendent Constantine Dillon tells The Times of Munster that he's had informal discussions with area leaders about construction of the bridge spanning U.S. 20, Indiana 249 and Burns Ditch in Portage.

Regional Development Authority President Bill Hanna supports the concept, saying it could improve the public's use of the Lake Michigan shore area.

Portage public works director A.J. Monroe says he thinks the money could be better spent on other projects. He says the proposed bridge would be at least 3 miles long and could cost tens of millions to build.
