Indiana conducting statewide tornado drill Thursday

A statewide tornado drill is set for Thursday, March 20, 2014 at 10:15 am and 7:35 pm.

Every county in Indiana will be testing its warning sirens (or other emergency notification systems) as part of a simulated emergency situation. It also gives the chance for schools to try out their severe weather drills.

If you have a severe weather radio, you'll hear the National Weather Service send out tone alerts at the designated times. You'll also see the alerts come up on your television screen and you'll hear them over the radio.

Sirens are designed to alert people who are outside that a dangerous storm is coming. You may not hear them if you are inside. It's recommended that you do the following to help you prepare for severe weather:

Get a NOAA Weather Radio and program it so you get alerts for your county.

Download the WTHR news app and SkyTrak Weather app. We'll send you push notifications whenever there's a severe weather watch or warning for central Indiana.

Sign up for the SkyTrak Weather Forecast daily email so you know when severe weather is coming.

Follow WTHR on Twitter and Facebook for real-time weather updates throughout the season.
