IMPD traffic officers redeployed in crime fight

The Indianapolis Metro Police Department says it's redeploying 27 officers from its Homeland Security Division Traffic Branch to help battle crime in the city.

The announcement comes after four people died in weekend violence. Another four were injured or wounded.

IMPD says motorcycle officers will be assigned to designated "hotspot" areas throughout the city. Their focus will be on "the people, places, activities contributing to crime and the fear of crime."

The officers will be performing those duties when not assigned to special events like the Indianapolis 500.

IMPD says it will continue to coordinate efforts with the Division of Homeland Security to make sure special events are secure.
