The Indianapolis Metro Police SWAT team arrested a standoff suspect who was holding his wife hostage in a west side home. The woman was uninjured.

Police were called to the scene on the Indianapolis near west side on N. Belmont Ave. near N. Sheffield Ave. and W. St. Clair St. at around 7:30 pm.

Neighbors heard the couple arguing and also thought they heard a possible gunshot from the home, according to police. They also saw a man pulling a woman into the home.

Officers tried to make contact with the couple but got no response. They were concerned that the woman had been shot and might need immediate medical attention - and that the man was armed. At that point they requested the SWAT team.

SWAT operators forced their way in and rescued the woman, who was not injured. The man, identified as 38-year-old Shelley Johnson of Indianapolis, was found hiding inside the home and taken into custody.

Johnson faces a preliminary charge of criminal confinement (D felony).
