IMPD releases photos of 'persons of interest' in deadly Fourth of July shooting
Investigators have released images taken on the night an Indianapolis teenager was shot and killed after the Fourth of July fireworks display last week.
Monquize Edwards, 16, died in the shooting on July 4 at the corner of Maryland and Illinois in downtown Indianapolis.
Edwards' mother, Penika, just got home from arranging her murdered son's funeral when she got a call about another teen's shooting death.
"Yeah Monquize's friend. I'll call you right back," Ms. Edwards told the caller.
Four days after Edwards' death, his family learned his friend, also 16, was shot to death in an eastside apartment complex Monday.
"They're not blood kin," she says of her son and the boy killed Monday.
But there is another kind of kinship here.
Penika Edwards says "it's really sad. Now I understand the way these mothers are feeling that are losing their young children to the streets."
Now police have released still photos from security cameras near Illinois and Maryland. Investigators describe the people in these images as "persons of interest" in the case. They want to talk to four men and one woman, who was wearing a red top and flag design pants.
IMPD Officer Kendale Adams says they show "some of the individuals that were congregating in the area of the shooting at the time or just prior to the shooting."
Police hope viewers study the faces and clothing in the photos.
We showed the five pictures to the victim's mother. She didn't recognize anyone, but had a message if someone does.
"If these are your children, please get them to turn themselves in, 'cause they can tell and get all this ironed out."
Two teens now dead in four days. They knew each other. Are their deaths connected?
"I hope it has nothing to do with it," says Penika Edwards. "I hope it doesn't. Trying to get back at somebody taking someone's life - that's not what it's about. It's about justice being served."
Police only want to talk with the five as persons of interest.
Anyone having information about the incident or knows the identity of the individuals depicted in the photos is urged to contact IMPD at 317.327.3087 or Crime Stoppers of Indiana at 317.262.TIPS (8477). Callers may also text "INDYCS" plus tip information to 274627 (CRIMES).
Meanwhile, Edwards' mother made a plea for anyone with information to come forward, and for the shooter to turn themselves in.
