An Indianapolis Metro Police officer is being asked to explain what led to him crashing his police vehicle into a ditch off westbound I-70.

It happened on the I-70 ramp to Rural/Keystone Ave. Friday afternoon.

The IMPD supervisor from the North District says two officers were heading to roll call this afternoon in separate vehicles. For unknown reasons, the first officer swerved off the roadway, hit a State Fairgrounds sign and crashed his cruiser into the ditch. He was not hurt.

The officer who crashed was identified as Demetric Smith.

IMPD says Officer Smith blew a 0.0 on the PBT (portable breath test) at the crash site.

Another officer was driving behind Smith in another squad car.
