A death investigation is underway on the Indianapolis southeast side as Metro Police investigate the possibility that a homeowner shot and killed an intruder in self-defense.

Police got the call about shots fired around 3:00 am on Naomi Street.

Investigators say they found a car in the middle of the street with the driver's side door open.

"It doesn't seem like a cut and dry home invasion. I don't know to what extent. I don't know what that means at this point, nor do the detectives. But we're just trying to piece it together. As I said, the homeowner is very cooperative," said Officer Christopher Wilburn, Indianapolis Metro Police.

The man who was killed was identified at Joshua Renick, 31, of Indianapolis. An autopsy is planned to learn the cause and manner of death.

Since this is an unusual case, a deputy prosecutor was called to the scene to help with the investigation.

At this point no charges have been filed.

If you have any information about this case, you're asked to contact Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS (8477).
