Several west side schools were placed on lockdown for around 40 minutes as Indianapolis Metro Police investigated a shooting that left one person dead Wednesday afternoon.

Police were called to the 900 block of Wyckford Drive just before 4:00 pm. That's near 10th and Girls School Road, about a quarter-mile from Ben Davis High School.

Police say two men approached the victim and shot him at least once in a robbery attempt. The two men fled in a vehicle. No other details were provided.

The victim was confirmed dead at the scene, which is at the Wyckford Commons apartment complex. The victim was later identified as 23-year-old James Vester of Lizton.

It's the city's 112th homicide for the year, up around 15 percent over last year.

A school lockdown was lifted at around 4:38 pm, but police are still seeking two suspects in connection with the case.

The following schools were on lockdown for about 40 minutes:

Ben Davis High School
Ben Davis 9th Grade Center
Chapel Hill 7th & 8th Grade Center
Chapel Wood Elementary School
Chapel Glen Elementary School

The school district was also holding some students at Ben Davis University High School, which is south of the investigation site, because those students live in the investigation neighborhood.
