IMPD identifies suspect injured in police action shooting

IMPD detectives are investigating the shooting of a suspect by an IMPD officer Sunday afternoon on the east side.

On Monday, IMPD identified the suspect as Braunel Mackey, 23. He was preliminarily charged with possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon. He has a previous conviction for robbery and is prohibited from possessing a firearm.

Mackey is currently being held in the Wishard Detention Center where he is being treated for his injuries. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will review the probable cause affidavit and make the final charging determination.

Sunday incident

IMPD officers were dispatch to the 4800 block of 19th Street just after 1:00 p.m. for a disturbance between a man and woman who have a child together.  The woman told 911 dispatchers that the male had a gun and was making threats to kill her. 

Officers arrived and found the woman outside the home and talked to her about was going on. The woman told police that the man might be inside the home and that he had guns.  One officer started to go back inside with the woman when they found the man just inside the home with a gun that was pointed at the woman. The officer with the woman fearing that the man would shoot the woman drew his weapon and fired at the suspect. 

A second officer on the other side of house and the officer who fire the shot retreated with the woman to ensure her safety. As the officers were taking cover the suspect ran out of the house about two blocks away to the 1800 block of Riley Avenue. 

The suspect did not respond to officers request to stop and surrender but was eventually apprehended by an IMPD K-9 Officer and his partner. 

The suspect was suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest and was taken to Wishard Hospital in serious condition. 

The officer who fired his gun has been identified as Officer Greg Taylor of the IMPD's East District. Officer Taylor is an 11-year veteran of the police department.
