IMPD: 90 percent of murder suspects have criminal records
Police are working to track down the people responsible for homicide cases. They say the vast majority of the time, they already have files on those involved.
"For the first time that we know of in the history of Indianapolis, 90 percent of the suspects in homicides have criminal records. Ninety percent," said Indianapolis Public Safety Director Troy Riggs. "Your police department's doing a good job arresting people. I don't think we're doing a good job on the judicial side of keeping them in prison long enough."
There have been 70 homicides in Indianapolis so far this year, compared to 56 at the same time last year.
IMPD says it has a 73 percent clearance rate for the crimes.
