IFD battles house fire on northwest side
Fire crews are battling the elements as well as a house fire in the 800 block of West Roache Street. A failed hydrant impacted firefighters as they fought the fire.
One firefighter has been slightly injured at the scene. According to IFD spokesman Lt. Larry Tracy, the firefighter suffered a hand injury and was taken to the hospital for X-rays to determine if the hand was broken.
Tracy said heavy fire was showing when crews first arrived around 3:20 a.m., causing the firefighters to assume a defensive strategy due the danger of collapse.
An inspector from Citizens Water is checking out why the first hydrant firefighters tried to use malfunctioned, causing crews to tap another hydrant down the street.
There is no word on whether anybody was in the house at the time of the fire. But neighbors told Eyewitness News that nobody was currently living there, although people had been in and out periodically.
The house immediately east of the fire scene sustained slight damage to its siding, according to Tracy.
