Ice skating has returned to the Indiana State Fairgrounds

The new $10 million Youth Arena officially opens Monday after several hundred people attended a free public skating event Saturday.

The new ice rink is part of the $63 million renovation to the Fairgrounds Coliseum that is scheduled for completion by next summer's Indiana State Fair. Work on the coliseum renovation began last October.

Tom Stropky of Fishers brought his daughter to the new rink over the weekend. He tells The Indianapolis Star it is a big improvement over the sense of being in a barn like it was in the old coliseum.

The rink is the new home ice for some youth hockey teams and the amateur figure skaters of the Winter Club of Indianapolis.
