I-70, Sam Jones to be reconfigured at I-465

Indianapolis - Work has already begun to reconfigure the interchanges at I-465 on the west side from Sam Jones Expressway to Kentucky Avenue/State Road 67.

Walsh Construction Company and E&B Paving, both based in Indiana, are working on the $88 million project, which includes the reconfiguration of the Sam Jones Expressway and I-70 interchanges.

More from INDOT:

Starting before morning rush hour Friday, April 9, the ramp from I-70 westbound to I-465 northbound is closing while the interchange is reconstructed. The detour follows I-70 westbound to Sam Jones Expressway to I-465 northbound. The ramp, which carries 4,000 cars a day, is expected to reopen in the fall of this year.

The new I-70 interchange design increases capacity while improving travel times by replacing the existing 25 mile per hour eastbound I-70 to northbound I-465 loop ramp with a 40 mile per hour directional flyover ramp that will have two lanes instead of the existing one. Safety is being increased by reducing weaving conflicts between ramp and mainline traffic.

The re-designed Sam Jones Expressway also adds capacity and improves safety for the motoring public. The finished interchange will have a two lane southbound I-465 exit. This interchange will also use concrete barriers prior to the I-465 merge to reduce weaving conflicts. I-465 is being expanded to four through lanes in each direction with additional or extended auxiliary lanes.

With the start of construction at I-70 and Sam Jones Expressway, the 45 MPH work zone speed limit has expanded to include the Accelerate 465 road projects between Sam Jones Expressway and I-74 on the west side. The speed limit on Sam Jones Expressway is now 30 MPH in the work zone. During construction, three lanes of through traffic are to be maintained on I-465 during peak travel times. Additional restrictions can be expected as the project progresses. Construction is expected to wrap up in Fall 2011.

As one of the first segments of I-465 ever built, the eleven miles of interstate between West 56th Street and S.R. 67/Kentucky Avenue cannot handle existing traffic volumes at peak periods. Accelerate 465 is a Major Moves corridor project that adds lanes to I-465 and reconfigures interchanges to promote the free-flow movement of traffic. Pedestrian crossings, noise barriers and other improvements benefit nearby residents.
