Authorities are investigating the apparent drowning death of a two-year-old Howard County boy.

The boy's mother called 911 at 3:30 pm Monday saying her son was not breathing. She didn't see what happened, but she believed he'd fallen in the family's pool. She found him lying on the ground near the pool steps.

Medics tried to revive the boy, identified as Daymian Newell, but they were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at Community Howard Hospital.

A witness told investigators Daymian had been playing in the yard with other children before it happened. The other children went inside the house, then realized Daymian had not come in. Two of the children found him floating face down in the pool and pulled him out, then alerted their mother.

An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death. The case is under investigation.
