Homes evacuated while IMPD investigates suspected pipe bomb
Some homes were evacuated Tuesday afternoon as police investigated a suspicious package in the 1200 block of Central Ave. in Indianapolis.
The investigation closed down that block of Central Ave. and authorities conducted a controlled explosion.
IMPD Officer Chris Wilburn tells Eyewitness News the package was found inside a residence.
A bank representative was checking out the bank-owned property and noticed something that looked like a pipe bomb. Police were called in and learned a squatter was living in the home.
Officer Wilburn said the investigation is active and ongoing. "We're very determined we will piece every part of this puzzle together," he said.
At this point police don't know how long the device was in the home. Investigators will look at the device that was found, in addition to talking to witnesses.
Police are treating the area as a crime scene. The Indianapolis Metro and Fire Departments, along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, responded.
