Hazell making all the right chess moves at Purdue
Purdue's Darrell Hazell appreciates a good chess match.
So Saturday's season opener at Cincinnati can't get here quickly enough.
Hazell does not fit the traditional model of a Boilermakers coach. He looks younger than 49, is clean-shaven and keeps a simple, wooden chess board behind his desk. He's been playing the game since the age of 5, though he resists the urge when football is in season.
But if Hazell is going to fulfill the mission he was hired for - to win games, increase attendance and lead the Boilermakers back to the Rose Bowl - he must make all the right moves on Saturday afternoons.
