Hartford City official arrested on child molestation charges
A Hartford City public official was arrested on charges that he molested a relative.
John S. Adams, 66, is accused of raping and molesting the boy starting when the alleged victim was under ten years old.
Adams is a retired educator who worked in Blackford County Schools. He is also on the Hartford City Common Council and the Board of Public Works.
Blackford County Schools Superintendent Scot D. Croner issued this statement:@
"Yesterday afternoon I was notified that Mr. John Adams (retired Blackford teacher 2005) was arrested for sexual misconduct with a minor. First and foremost, on behalf of Blackford County Schools, our thoughts and prayers are with the alleged victims and their families involved in this investigation.
Mr. Adams is currently listed as a substitute teacher at BCS and has been approved to serve as an unpaid volunteer assistant for our cheerleading program. At this time, Mr. Adams has been placed on leave pending the determination of our administrative investigation.
Our local law enforcement has advised us that this is an ongoing investigation; therefore, Blackford County Schools has and will continue to take any and all steps necessary to ensure a safe environment for our students. If it is determined that BCS can be of any assistance to this investigation, our corporation will fully cooperate."
The alleged rape incidents occurred when the teen was 14 years old, and on another occasion when he was 15. Adams is also accused of sexually molesting him on numerous occasions, including forcing him to perform oral sex in exchange for money or drugs.
The allegations date back to when the alleged victim was eight years old. Adams is accused of providing prescription pills and alcohol to the alleged victim, and of watching pornographic movies with him.
The teen's mother told police that she had sometimes caught Adams and her son in the bathroom together, but that Adams allegedly told her he was waiting on her son to get out of the shower or get dressed.
The teen's mother was concerned that another underage relative could be another potential victim.
According to court documents, several adults told police they either suspected molestation was going on or that the alleged victim had told them about it. One witness told police that Adams had provided alcohol to minors on multiple occasions. That same witness also said Adams bought the alleged victim various gifts over the years.
Adams at first denied the allegations, but later admitted to oral sex with the teen on multiple occasions. However, he denied that any of the sexual contact happened before the teen turned 18. He said he had given the teen his prescription pills in the past but that it was for wisdom tooth pain.
Adams faces a count of child molesting, a Class A felony, and a count of sexual misconduct with a minor, a Class B felony. An initial hearing is set for Sept. 16th at 3:00 pm.
