HAMILTON COUNTY - There will soon be a new way to adopt a new pet - at the mall. The Hamilton County Humane Society is opening a new satellite location at the Hamilton Town Center Mall.

Too many dogs and cats are overcrowding animal shelters like Hamilton County's. It's a chronic, ongoing problem that accelerated with the downturn in the economy. But at the Hamilton County shelter, there's a unique effort to turn that problem around by bringing dogs and cats up for adoption to a shopping center.

"It's a much less emotional and depressing avenue for them to come and see just a handful, not overwhelming, and just maybe find the right fit for their family," said Rebecca Stevens, Hamilton County Humane Society.

Starting Saturday, the Humane Society's new satellite adoption center at the Hamilton Town Center Mall opens, bringing dogs and cats to its mall location for adoption. The move will put surrendered and neglected pets before thousands of potential new owners.

"People out there who may not be thinking about getting a pet, when they come in the store, they see the great animals we have available for adoption that need homes. They may go home and think about it and then come over to the shelter and see the plethora of animals that are available here," said Jennifer Judd, Humane Society volunteer.

The initial plan is to open the adoption center on Saturdays, but that may be expanded to Sundays.

The new mall location comes at another critical time for the Humane Society with another non-stop flow of owners surrendering their pets.

"I always say that pets are the silent victims of this because they are coming here in droves," said Stevens.

If the new mall location is a success, hundreds and perhaps thousands of dogs and cats will find new homes, sparing a overburdened shelter now trying to reinvent how pets are adopted.

A minimum of ten dogs and cats will be featured each Saturday for adoption but will head back to the shelter at the end of each day if homes are not found. The new location at the Hamilton Town Center opens Saturday morning at 11:00 am.
