Peru - The Grissom Air Reserve Base will open to private airplanes in March.

Montgomery Aviation of Zionsville will take over day-to-day civilian operations at the former Air Force base near Peru, midway between Indianapolis and South Bend. The company will provide aviation fuel, maintenance and other aircraft services under a five-year contract with the Miami County Economic Development Authority.

Authority board member James Tidd says the contract is the first step toward making Grissom a regional airport.

Grissom, which was downgraded to an air reserve base in 1994, has the longest runway in the state at 12,500 feet. It is home to the 434th Air Refueling Wing, which flies KC-135 refueling tankers.
