Grandmother of home invasion suspect speaks out
Three days after a brutal home invasion on the city's north side, police have arrested three suspects in connection with the crime. They're still looking for more. But tonight, the grandmother of one of the suspects already in jail accused of the rape, robbery and terrorizing of the family is crying out. She spoke exclusively to Eyewitness News.
Debra Graham is a broken woman. She can't understand how Trae Spells, the grandson she's helped raise since he was three, is sitting behind bars at the Marion County Jail charged with unspeakable acts of violence.
"I'm so sorry. I am so sorry," sobbed Graham
Graham greeted us on her front porch with cries of apology for a family that's suffered tremendously, potentially at the hands of her grandson, who just turned 18.
"Their life will never be the same. I know this. My life ain't the same and I can only imagine the fear these people went through. Oh, Jesus! I wish I could take their pain and just give it to myself," said Graham.
Graham learned of her grandson's arrest in connection with the heinous attack on a family in their north side home from a family member. That relative is a police officer and didn't want her to learn about it from the media.
"For this to happen, I never truly, honestly in my life dreamt that Trae would do something like this," said Graham.
Graham says her son, Trae's father, was murdered 15 years ago. the details remain a mystery. Since then, she's done her best to raise Trae right.
"He started hanging with the wrong people. I tried to get him to realize the people out here is not your friend and they're going to lead you on a path you can't turn around. He didn't want to listen. He just wanted to rip and run. He has shamed his family, but at the same time, we want him to know we love him," said Graham.
Debra says she hasn't spoken to her grandson yet, but when she does, her first question will be 'What happened?' In the meantime she's pleading for him to be honest, tell what happened, apologize and ask God for forgiveness.
