Girl, 17, struck by vehicle; shots fired at suspect's car
A 17-year-old girl is in the hospital after being struck by a vehicle Tuesday night.
Police say the teenager suffered a broken leg when she was struck around 9 p.m. at East Washington Street and North Gladstone Avenue.
A witness told police dispatchers occupants of two vehicles on East Washington St. were firing gunshots at each other when one of the vehicles struck the girl and left the scene. However, preliminary investigation shows someone on foot near the scene may have fired a gun in the direction of the vehicle that struck the girl.
"I just heard gunshots and a bunch of screeches, screeching tires, and people screaming," said one witness.
The victim was taken to Eskenazi Health. There is no word on whether she suffered any other injuries in addition to the leg fracture.
The girl's mother says the suspect was making sexual overtures to her daughter and other girls as they stood on the curb. A witness says the car pulled over to talk to the girls, then one girl kicked his door. The suspect allegedly then drove onto the curb to hit them.
It is still not known who fired the shots at the suspect's vehicle, but the girl's mother expressed thanks at the scene.
"Whoever the man is, whoever you are who was protecting my kids, thank you. I appreciate that," she said.
