The Indianapolis Fire Department is on the scene of a large spill at a Shell gas station at the intersection of 30th and Illinois Street Sunday evening.

The streets around the spill have been blocked while it is cleaned up and it is expected to be open to traffic before rush hour Monday.

According to a IFD release an employee was cleaning a filter on a fuel pump when something came loose and a several hundreds of gallons of fuel leaked out.

Firefighters have blocked the storm drains to prevent any more fuel from leaking into the storm drain system.

Personnel from the Department of Public Works are on the scene trying to determine if any of the gas that escaped went into the storm drain system and where it went. They have arranged for a emergency contractor to clean it up Sunday night.
