Gary School Board votes to close 6 schools
The Gary School Board has voted to close Lew Wallace High School and five other schools in a budget-cutting move.
The board voted 4-2 Tuesday to approve the closings to help close a $27.5 million deficit brought about by overspending, property tax caps and a low property tax collection rate.
The Post Tribune reports the board had received a recommendation to close one additional school but officials backed off the recommendation after a public outcry.
The district is struggling to find money to repair aging buildings, make its payroll and meet retirement payment obligations.
Because of nagging financial issues and poor academic scores, the Indiana Department of Education now manages all of the district's federal funding and is leading a teacher training program aimed at improving classroom performance.
