Gary National Guard receives 2 new helicopters
The Indiana National Guard aviation support center in the northwest part of the state has received two new helicopters.
The Guard announced Monday that the Gary base received the UH-72 Lakota helicopters Friday. They replace OH-58 Kiowas that were formerly used.
The Lakota is a light utility helicopter that can carry more troops than the Kiowa. It also has improved communications and enhanced image transmission.
Along with homeland security missions, the helicopters will be used to assist local, state and federal law enforcement agencies in emergency response.
The Lakota is manufactured in the U.S. by Airbus Group.
