A 12-story hotel that once was a symbol of a Gary's hopes for turnaround but turned into a constant reminder of the northwest Indiana city's troubles could be coming down later this year.

The Post-Tribune of Merrillville reports that Gary's Redevelopment Commission has voted to advertise for companies to demolish the former Sheraton Hotel near City Hall. The building, with its missing window panes and rusted ledges, has been an eyesore for years.

Redevelopment Department Director Joseph Van Dyk estimates the demolition will cost about $2.5 million.

The building opened as a Holiday Inn in 1971 and closed after four years. It reopened in 1979 as the Sheraton Hotel and closed again in 1985.

The city plans to build a park at the site.
