Funds pour in for baby in international surrogacy dispute
A somewhat happier ending for a baby in the middle of an international surrogacy dispute.
An Australian couple had gone to Thailand to find a surrogate mother. She got pregnant with twins, but the Australian couple only took the daughter, leaving the son after learning he had down syndrome.
That left the surrogate with crippling medical bills. But a fund that was set up has now been flooded with calls and online donations totaling more than $200,000.
"Thank you so much. I have no words for this. Everyone is very generous. I can't say anything but thank you - thank you very much," said the surrogate.
Surrogacies in Thailand are now under investigation, leaving other expectant parents in limbo.
The Australian couple went to Thailand because surrogacies are not allowed in Australia.
