Former Ball State coach Majerus dies at 64
Former Ball State men's basketball coach Rick Majerus has passed away at the age of 64.
NBC Sports is citing multiple sources about Majerus' passing, including Loyola (Chicago) head coach Porter Moser, a former assistant under Majerus at St. Louis University.
"RIP to my friend and mentor Coach Majerus. I learned so much about the game and life. We lost a One of the best! My heart is heavy tonight," Moser posted to his Twitter account Saturday evening.
Majerus coached the Cardinals to a 43-17 record over two seasons in Muncie from 1987-89. Ball State reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament in his second season, beating Pittsburgh 68-64, before falling to top-seeded Illinois.
Majerus left the Cardinals for Utah following that season, leading the Utes to the NCAA Championship game in 1998. He took over as the head coach at St. Louis after three years away from coaching. He announced earlier this year he would not coach this season due to health concerns.
Majerus' overall record as a collegiate head coach was 517-215.
