Fire guts building near Garfield Park
A building emptied for renovation sustained heavy damage early Friday morning on the south side.
Firefighters were called to the 2500 block of South Shelby Street, across from the Garfield Park tennis courts, shortly after 12:30 a.m. and found smoke coming from the second floor window of the brick building. Then needed a half hour to bring the fire under control.
Damage was estimated at $150,000. The cause is under investigation.
Neighbors say the building had a new roof installed in 2011, but has been vacant since.
Inspectors will check the building's integrity after daylight. Firefighters had concerns about an interior floor collapsing as they worked to extinguish the fire.
