A fire caused around $20,000 in damage at an Indianapolis east side home on Christmas morning.

Indianapolis Fire Department crews say no one was home at the time. A passerby who was leaving church noticed smoke coming from the back of the home in the 4900 block of E. 21st St. He called 911 and knocked on the windows and doors to make sure no one was inside.

Firefighters arrived quickly and had the fire under control in half an hour, preventing further property damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Neighbors reported that they think the family had left for the holidays, but they had no names or contact information.
