Finding warm weather getaways at the last minute
All of this cold, snowy weather has many thinking about warmer days ahead. Spring break is right around the corner and, while many families have already started making travel plans, those who were planning to stay close to home are having second thoughts.
So, we went out in search of last-minute spring break travel deals for those looking to get away.
The issue is reaching your destination without breaking the bank. If you want to fly, your cheap flights are booked, which is no surprise. However, if you're willing to vacate the notion that you have to fly out on a weekend and return on a weekend, you can shave some money off your ticket price by flying during the week.
Of course, driving is a lot cheaper. A gallon of gas costs 15-cents less than at this time last year.
As a destination, Florida is pretty much booked. But, thinking outside the box, the gulf coastal beaches of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama are still open possibilities and drive able in one day.
"I think that's still a struggling area because of the oil (spill) that happened a couple of years ago," said travel agent Bethanne Harrison-Brown. "They're still trying to get 'we're open, our beaches are good. It's coming back alive, so I think you're still going to have some options."
If you are considering a cruise, think about choosing a port you can drive you to. Charleston, South Carolina is less than 12 hours from Indianapolis. For a family of four, you're spending a little more time traveling, but a lot less money when you cash in on a great cruise deal.
"That's the thing about the availability of those 3, 4, 5 night itineraries. With those 3 and 4-night itineraries, that kind of dictates where you can go because on three nights, you're not going to be able to go all the way down to St. Thomas because there's not enough time to get back," said Harrison-Brown. "So, generally those are western Caribbean of the Bahamas. So, that gives you a little warmth."
So now is the time to get online, or call a travel agent, because your options are quickly running out.
