Firefighters were unable to rescue 15 pets from a burning home, after the owner and one cat escaped just after midnight Sunday.

Indianapolis firefighters were dispatched to the report of a house fire on Habig Road near the intersection of South Meridian Street and Hanna Avenue on the city's south side just after midnight.

The home owner, Peggy Davis, 64, was sleeping when her dogs started barking loudly and she awoke and discovered smoke in the house. She was able to get out of the residence with one cat and called 911.

Eleven dogs and four other cats that were in the house died.

Firefighters say they had to navigate extreme storage and debris in the house to put out the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
