According to NBC News, gunshots and tear gas were fired overnight in the St. Louis suburb gripped by protests over the death of an unarmed black teen, officials said. Violence broke out after about 200 people defied a midnight curfew for the town of Ferguson, Missouri.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Capt. Ron Johnson said one person was shot and is in critical condition at the hospital. Seven people have been arrested, Johnson said.

Tear gas and tactical units were deployed - despite earlier pledges to shift from a militarized response to the protests. Johnson defended the move, saying authorities feared for officers' safety and that a police car was shot at. "Tonight's response was a proper one," he said, adding that he was "disappointed" that violence broke out on the city's streets.
