Fatal crash investigators are on the scene of motorcycle crash that has claimed a life on Interstate 465 near Interstate 65 on the northwest side.

The crash occurred in the southbound lanes around 1:40 a.m.

A Metro Police officer reported the roar of two vehicle engines and saw a Dodge Charger and a motorcycle racing near West 71st Street and Georgetown Road at speeds in excess of 60 mph.

The officer attempted to catch up to the two vehicles as their speed increased, according to Lt. Christopher Bailey. However they drove onto southbound I-465 from 71st Street and the officer lost sight of both.

After entering southbound I-465, he saw the Charger driving much slower and was able to make a traffic stop just south of 56th Street. During the stop, the officer suspected the driver of the Charger to be under the influence of alcohol.

A short time later, Indiana State Police Trooper notified IMPD of a possible fatal motorcycle crash near 62nd Street.  Witnesses helped officers confirm that the motorcycle crash was related to the IMPD traffic stop of the Charger.

The driver of the motorcycle was transported to IU Health-Methodist Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

His identify is being withheld pending notification to family members.
