Fans cheer Arsenal Tech Titans all the way to a State Championship
For the first time in more than three decades, an IPS school has been crowned state basketball champions.
Arsenal Tech made history on the hardwood at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Titans came out on top Saturday night, scoring their first-ever title in a down-to-the-wire victory at the state finals that Tech fans will be celebrating for a long time to come.
The anticipation of watching the Titans win was palpable even for the folks selling T-shirts outside.
"I think it's incredible that these guys have risen to the top. You know what I'm saying? Quality always comes to the top," KB Newton said of the team's season and chance at the state title.
"This is going to be a historic day in the history of Tech High School," said Jeff Klinck, as he raised his glass to toast the team and their efforts at a party for alumni. "I graduated 25 years ago in '89 and if you'd have told me back then that Tech would make the state championship, there's no way."
Oh, but there was Saturday, and the fans came out to prove it.
"It's Hoosier Hysteria. This is what high school basketball is all about," said fan and Tech alum Shane Burns.
"It boosts morale, lets the kids know they can be anything they want to be - president, astronaut, Superman - all that. They can be anything they want," said Jacobi Bell.
Now for the players at Tech, it's time to add State Champions to that list.
